Building the brand for an iconic literary address

The
Brief

Built in 1752, Brown’s Hotel is an iconic literary address in West Wales. Sitting at the heart of Laugharne, Carmarthenshire, it serves as a world-class hotel, pub, restaurant, and music venue. The pub was also a favourite of poet and author Dylan Thomas, who lived in the village while writing some of his most famous works. He spent so much time there that he used to give out the telephone number of the pub as his own!

Situated a stone’s throw from the spectacular ruined castle and Thomas’s own Boathouse, Brown’s Hotel is the heart and soul of this charming village.

Project

Brown’s Hotel reached out to Monddi with a challenge: refreshing their brand’s look and feel whilst retaining the building’s unique history. Additionally, the logo design needed to feature minimal upgrades from the original in order not to adversely alter this recognisable, historical landmark.

This was a challenge that the team at Monddi relished — it’s an honour to be able to work on and pay respect to such important heritage works.

Creating the
Identity

The
Solution

To achieve this, we updated and simplified the Browns Hotel’s font and colour scheme. We created a single icon, as well as a full logo design, for the hotel’s stationery and web design.

In addition to the hotel brand mark design, we were also tasked with creating a separate, brand-new logo for Dylan’s Bar, the hotel’s watering hole. The bar’s brand mark features the same style as the hotel’s, reflecting the historic theme of the establishment. It is used across the stationery and menus.
